Starting a Medical Transcription Business

Medical transcription is the process of transferring dictation of physicians and other health care providers into written text.

The medical transcription field is a growing one, and one that works well in a home based environment.  According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, medical transcription is predicted to “grow faster than average for all occupations through 2014.”

What skills are needed in starting a medical transcription business?

  • A knowledge of medical terminology
  • Good listening skills
  • Good grammar skills
  • At least average typing skills
  • Give attention to detail
  • Self starter

Medical Transcription is one of the home based businesses in which you can earn a steady, full time income.  Some transcriptionists charge per line, others charge per hour.  When you get some experience under your belt, you can charge a higher rate.

What tools do you need to start your business?

  • ·        A computer with a good word processing program

  •         A transcriber machine if you are transcribing from dictation tapes

  • ·        A fax machine and copier are helpful

  • ·        A medical spell checker is helpful

If you have a background in medical terminology and are looking for a home business that has a good outlook for future opportunities and a good, solid salary, this may be the business for you to consider.

If you do not have a background in medical terminology, you can get some training, either at a community college, or through a home study course, and be on your way to a new business.

As with all businesses, but especially medical transcription, you will want to keep currently educated new products and procedures.  Stay up to date on the names and spellings of new drugs and medical procedures.  Join a medical transcription forum or membership site, to stay in touch with what is going on in the field.

When starting a medical transcription business, you will want to find a program that will give you step by step advice on how to get your business up and running.  Look for one by someone who has actually worked in the medical transcription field successfully and can pass along their knowledge to you.

This is a business you will start and grow yourself.  You will be responsible for getting your own clients, and giving them expert service.   It may take some time to get your business going to where it can be a regular income, but do not give up.   It is a business you can work at for many years to come and be proud of.

A guide I recommend to get your business started is "The Complete Medical Transcription System" by Mila Sidman.  Mila trained as a medical transcriptionist in 1998, and then started her own MT business from home.  She built a successful business, and her company eventually employed 20 medical transcriptionists.  The company was later taken over by a larger company.  Mila now works to help others start their own business.
